JEEVANSHALA - School of Life

Jeevanshala - School of Life
(27:38 mins/ Marathi, Hindi, Pawri with Eng. subtitles/ Documentary)
Dir. Manasi Pingle

About the film: This is the story of 'Jeevanshalas' i.e. Schools of Life -- primary schools run by the Adivasi (Tribal) people's movement in the Narmada River Valley in Central India. These schools are a living example of how people's movements can engage in the construction of alternative social structures. This constructive activity is concomitant with struggle and so the motto of the Jeevanshalas is "ladhai padhai saath saath" (we struggle and study together). The documentary offers a glimpse into the life of the children and an opportunity to share the experiences of the activists, teachers and the villagers themselves with a larger audience who believes and dreams of a better world.

About the filmmaker: After graduating from the Xaviers Institute of Communications, Manasi worked in the television and film industry in Mumbai and has directed and produced two documentaries on work done by peoples’ movements. Currently she works with the Bengaluru Sustainability Forum, following her interest in just, equitable and sustainable urban development.
