R V. Ramani, born in Mumbai, in 1957, graduated in Physics from Mumbai University and worked as a Photojournalist in Mumbai. He later studied filmmaking at the Film and TV Institute of India, Pune, graduating in 1985, with specialization in Motion Picture Photography. He moved to Chennai in 1990.
Since then, he has been making his own independent impressionistic documentaries, establishing a unique style of his own.
