EARTH CRUSADER

About the Film: Sustainability of an ideology through the mission and vision of Didi Contractor‘s mud architecture.

About the Filmmaker: Shabnam Sukhdev is an award-winning filmmaker and educator with undergraduate degrees in Psychology and Sociology, and a B.Ed in Special Education. She pursued her interest in filmmaking by obtaining a 3-year post-graduate Diploma in Cinema from the Film and Television Institute of India, Pune. Discrimination and human rights issues concern her deeply and are reflected as recurring themes in her work. She believes that a personal independent voice can deeply reflect the concerns of a society.

Film 1: STRENGTH IN DIVERSITY, STRESS TOLERANT CROPS OF NAGALAND

(15 mins./ Nagamese with English subtitles/ 2019/ Documentary)

Dir. Chentei Lam Khiamniungan.

About the Film: Chentei made the film on his grandmother and how she grows her millets. The film gives some insight into stress resistant crops, the value of traditional agriculture and inherent knowledge within the community.


Film 2: BAMBOO BALLADS

(15 mins./ Malayalam with English subtitles/ 2020/ Documentary)

Dir.Sajeed Naduthody.

About the film: A documentary that tells the story of a school student, Naina Febin, who is using music to conserve her favourite plant, bamboo. She plants bamboo saplings in every available space—school campuses, public areas, private compounds, and so on.

About the Filmmaker: A journalist-turned-filmmaker, Sajeed Naduthody started his career as Sub-Editor with The New Indian Express, Hyderabad, after completing his post-graduation in Mass Communication and Journalism from University of Calicut. He then joined the Educational Multimedia Research Centre, University of Calicut and started to script and direct educational documentaries and video programmes for UGC to be telecast on Doordharshan and other national educational TV channels. His documentaries have been recognized and awarded at various film festivals abroad. He has received the UGC-CEC National Awards and the NCERT All India Children’s Educational Video Festival Award three times, as well as Kerala State Television Award for Best Documentary Director.


Film 3: THE GRASSHOPPERS SLEEP HERE

(8 mins./ Malayalam with English subtitles/ 2021/ Short fiction)

About the Film: When a man comes with a grass cutting machine to a field, a girl is seen sleeping there. Where developments are inevitable, this simple yet layered film strongly prompts the audience to acknowledge the small ecosystems that are inevitably important.

About the Filmmaker: Balaram J was born and brought up in Kerala, India. He pursued Animation Film Design at the National Institute of Design, Ahmedabad. His feature film credits include Lijo Jose Pellissery's Jallikattu (2019) and Churuli (2021). He enjoys telling compelling stories through all visual mediums. His films explore his political beliefs, philosophical ideas and fancies about life. He wishes to push the limits and discover the unexplored capacities of storytelling. Currently, he is working as an Assistant Director and Pre-Production Artist in feature films and advertisements while developing stories for his next films.

SHEPHERDESS OF THE GLACIERS

(74 mins./ Tibetan with English subtitles/ 2016/ India, France/ Documentary)

Dirs. Stanzin Dorjai Gya and Christiane Mordele

About the Film: An intimate portrayal of a shepherdess living in the Himalayas as she tends her herd of cashmere goats through the harsh winter months and the ever-present threat of predators.

About the Filmmaker: Stanzin Dorjai Gya hails from a remote village called Gya in Ladakh, North India. He had a semi-nomadic childhood, spending half of the month tending his family’s herd of yaks and cashmere goats, while attending school during the other half. Stanzin completed his schooling from an alternative school called SECMOL (Students Educational and Cultural Movement of Ladakh) where he learnt film-making and that is now his life’s passion. He has directed and produced notable feature films and documentaries on regional, national and international issues. He was chosen as the District Youth Icon (Leh) during the Lok Sabha Elections, 2019. Christiane Mordelet  lectures on solar energy and architecture all over the world and has taken over a thousand students on trips to Greenland and Mongolia, to Ladakh and the Great Canadian North for 35 years. Since 2007, she has been living in Ladakh five months every year, where she works on Environment and Cinema together with Stanzing Dorjai Gya. She has raised funds to meet the needs of the Shepherds’ Association in Gya - the building of permanent sheepfolds, enclosed areas for the protection of cattle, solar lighting.
