Curators Note - BBFFF 2023

Curator's Note
4th Beyond Borders Feminist Film Festival (BBFFF) 2023

Of all the ‘isms’, its Feminism that has the power to challenge and change the stereotypical and misogistic attitudes and actions of human society. While curating the 4th edition of this festival that brings feminist cinema from South Asia, it has been important to use the ‘beyond borders’ and ‘feminist lens’ carefully and contextually.

What began in 2020 and continued as an online festival in 2021, it has become hybrid in 2022 and 2023. The festival still has a long journey to travel within the country, across and beyond the borders to watch and talk about the stories that filmmakers tell. We begin the festival each year on South Asian Women’s Day with solidarity to Kamla Bhasin and the many other South Asian feminists who we remember from the past while strengthening the connections to the future.

Curating this festival with my co-curator and award-winning filmmaker, Reena Mohan has been an energising experience to say the least. A big thanks to all the filmmakers for sharing their films pro-bono with the festival, Jagori, the India Habitat Centre, Alliance Francaise de Delhi, Kriti Film Club team and volunteers, and many other filmmaker friends who made this festival edition possible.

The 4th Beyond Borders Feminist Film Festival presents films curated around the following eight themes:
  • Dreams and Desires
  • Elder Strories
  • Feminist Voices
  • Freedom and Isms
  • Memories and Nurturing
  • Migrant Stories
  • Silence and Relationships
  • Student Films
Documentaries, Fiction (experimental, performative, drama), Features and Animations from six countries including Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Nepal, Pakistan and Sri Lanka bring us close to the lives, experiences, thoughts and feelings of visual storytellers and protagonists. We have included several student-made films alongwith those by upcoming and established filmmakers. Several films have their Delhi premieres, and some of them their India and World Premieres at our festival.

We travel across time and geographies, on a cinematic journey that makes us reflect and introspect, believe and demystify, learn and unlearn, laugh and cry, silently and vocally experiencing feminism in diverse and inclusive ways.

The festival is hybrid once again this year. The in-person edition with 45 films is being held in two segments. The first is from 30th November to 4th December 2023 at the India Habitat Centre and is organised by Kriti Film Club in collaboration with Jagori. The second segment is from 5th to 8th December 2023 at the Alliance Francaise de Delhi and is organised independently by Kriti Film Club.

The online edition is being held from 16th to 30th December 2023 with selected films from the in-person edition and additional films.

We are a small and growing festival and request for audience and other contributions. You can make a viewer contribution here or via QR code

Please share responses and feedback on the films you watch as well as the festival experience on space.kriti@gmail.com so we can share them with the filmmakers and enhance the festival in the coming year.

We hope that you find the films waiting to be watched in your pathways of life.
