As part of the Global campaign of 16 Days of Activism against Gender Based Violence, November 30th is marked each year, as 'South Asian Women's Day' - to remember the shared histories and feminist struggles of the region. This day was designated by Sangat under the leadership of senior woman activist, Kamla Bhasin and celebrates feminist friendships in and across South Asia. We mark this day in 2022 with the screening of a recent award winning documentary, FROM THE SHADOWS #Missinggirls.
The solidarity continues with the 3rd edition of the Beyond Borders Feminist Film Festival from 1st to 5th December 2022, at the India Habitat Centre in New Delhi.
When I first curated this, in 2020, on the request of Kamla Bhasin, I did not think that it would take on a life of itself...But it did, as we organised the 2021 online edition, and this year, the festival goes hybrid.
The online festival will begin on Human Rights Day, 10th December and continue until 25th December 2022, on the Kriti Film Club's online portal, Doculive.
Curated by Aanchal Kapur and Reena Mohan, this festival of feminist cinema is organised by the Kriti Film Club and Jagori.
The films at the festival present and promote feminist thinking and action for equity, justice, peace and sustainability, of people, places, and policies, across our countries. Feminism as a way of life, a perspective, an ideology, and an action that makes the personal, political....a construct and practice that interplays gender and intersectionalities and how they affect us in our natural and physical environment.
We believe in FeminismAcross identities and intersectionalities
For equality and equity
For love and friendship
For justice and peace
We believe in the ‘ism’
that makes the personal. political…
To empower…
To collectivise..
To express ourselves freely…
Join us in this feminist film journey with the voice and image of power!
The Delhi edition will screen 16 films, while the online festival will include approximately 45 films (excluding some of those shown in-person). The screenings will be followed by discussions with the filmmakers, in-person and/ or online, as possible.
The mixed genre of films will be screened, including short fiction, short and long documentaries, animation and music videos. The films at the festival are made by students, amateur and independent filmmakers from India and South Asia.
The in-person screenings are curated with films on #missinggirls; #acidattacksurivivors #mentalhealth #disability #womensvoices #invisiblelabour #mobility #sexualharassmentattheworkpla #genderandintersectionalities #culture #history #lockdownstories #home #loss #identity and #feministchoices.
The online edition extends itself to include more themes #culture #education #freedomofexpression #mental health #disability #family #relationships #friendships #love #violence against women #identity #sexuality #labour #livelihood #environment #politics #conflict #resistance #partition #caste #class #gender #religion #diversities.
The hybrid nature of the festival will allow a large audience across India, South Asia and the world to watch a diverse mix of feminist and gender based cinema.
The online festival has been made possible due to the amazing support, hard work and energy of several friends, filmmakers and colleagues. First and foremost, the support of my co-curator, Reena Mohan (senior filmmaker, editor and friend). Thanks are due to all the filmmakers who have shared their films for the online festival with such open hearts. The Kriti team and Kriti Film Club members and volunteers, especially Saransh Bisht, Aarti Khare, Lata Chaudhary and Veenu Kakkar Kapoor who have helped put together this online edition. We hope everyone enjoys the festival as much as we have in putting it together. To a world of social change with #thoughtprovokingcinema #feministcinema
